White Patina
Bismuth Nitrate: 4 tablespoons
Tin Oxide: 4 tablespoons
Titanium Dioxide: 4 tablespoons
Water: 1 pint
Nitric Acid: 2 drops (helps bite)
This amazing patina must be made at least three days in advance prior to application for the chemicals to mix together completely. I usually wait a week before I apply it. When you are ready to apply the solution, first heat the bronze with a torch; then apply the solution sparingly with a brush. As soon as the patina looks the way you want it, withdraw the heat source. Any added heat may blacken the patina. Do not wash this patina. Instead apply wax or spray lacquer as these will not affect the color. This patina is very versatile in that it can be used in combination with other pigments and oxides to achieve off-whites and pastels. Be sure to buy a good grade of bismuth nitrate or the patina will turn green. This patina will also work on iron, steel, and aluminum indoors if you prep the metal first with Birchwood Casey's "Presto Black." You must wax this patina while the metal is still warm.
